Do not disturb a.k.a DND

Posted in Corporate, India.

I am a vodafone mobile customer. I am registered for DND (Do not disturb) since a long time (> 8 months). Still after this, I am getting calls from Companies regarding loans, credit cards and insurance on a regular basis.

As per National Do Not Call Registry website (http://ndncregistry.gov.in/ndncregistry/index.jsp):
“To discourage the telemarketers who make calls to the numbers registered in Do Not Call List, a provision has been made whereby Rs.500/ – shall be payable by the telemarketer to the service provider for every first unsolicited commercial communication (UCC) and Rs.1000/- shall be payable for subsequent UCC. There is a provision for disconnection of the telemarketer telephone number / telecom resource if the UCC is sent even after levy of Rs.500/- & Rs.1000/- tariff. In case of non-compliance to the Telecom Unsolicited Commercial Communications Regulations, 2007, the Service Provider is also liable to pay an amount by way of financial disincentive, not exceeding Rs.5000/- for first non-compliance of the regulation and in case of second or subsequent such non-compliance, an amount not exceeding Rs.20,000/- for each such non-compliance.”

I had complained to Vodafone many times regarding this but they are unable to take any action.
It seems DND policy is of no use in this country. There is no solution.

Next time an insurance agent calls threaten them for legal action. It worked for me.

However suppose you have an ICICI account, your mobile number will be with them and banks use it for cross selling creditcards, insurance etc. You can put an end to that by calling their customer care.

If things are getting worse, file a case with the consumer court.

Also make sure you dont give your mobile number to those guys who stand outside every mall promising free vacation/holidays.

I already have done all these things.

3 times filed complaint with consumer forum.
Have registered with all major banks for DND separately thru their website.

Supreme court rightly says that this country needs Do-Call Registry and not a Do-Not-Call registry.

Every time I complained to Vodafone, I got following reply:

We have registered your concern regarding the unwanted solicitation calls received on your Vodafone number. As per the TRAI guidelines, the details shared by you will be forwarded further to the telecom operator brand from where the call has been initiated to take the necessary actions. We would request you to provide us with the next 21 days for the same.
