I love peace and I love small companies/Startup because:
- Everybody knows everybody and is reachable.
- Its like an extended family.
- It is usually very easy to see how your contributions supports the company and you feel more valuable.
- You end up taking on more and more diverse tasks.
- You get to learn a ton and be a real part of the team.
I hate crowd and big companies because:
- There are too many arbit policies.
- Fixed timing like 9 to 6. After 6, no ACs.
- Babu culture and bureaucracy.
- Nobody listens.
- Stupid firewall rules setup.
- HR people don’t even reply to mails. Are HR people consider themselves GOD?, Do we work for HR people or the Company?
- Accounting people don’t understand account/tax rules.
- Too deep hierarchy.
- There is so much back stabbing and infighting going on.
- It’s hard to fire people.
- Status quo / Follower mentality.
- People join for job security, rather than opportunity to grow, learn or take risks.
One of the other differences between big company and a startup is that biggies tend to have developed procedures to protect themselves against mistakes. Big companies do not want a risk and play safe. A startup walks like a toddler, bashing into things and falling over all the time.
For good programmers, one of the best things about working for a startup is that there are few checks on releases. In true startups, there are no external checks at all. If you have an idea for a new feature in the morning, you can write it and push it to the production servers very fast. And when you can do that, you have more ideas.
At big companies, software has to go through various approvals before it can be launched. And the cost of doing this can be enormous—in fact, discontinuous.

I would say it’s an open discussion but the part about “job Security”, would agree here in 90% cases, good thoughts though, keep up the good work.
Absolutely true! The freedom You get @ startup to develop and code makes You a much
better programmer , then simply getting fuddled in a big MNC.The problem I think is, esp. in India , most people run after such things as job security, company brand image, onsite opportunities, etc and forget the most important think they ought to learn as they gain experience- their coding , design and pregramming skills. We have far too many managers here who think they are GODS, but how many of us have real passion for work, and would enjoy coding for years?
Hi Pankaj,
I am agree with your view.in small or medium setup u can know every
part of working unlike in big co.In big MNC u r resposible for a
small part of total works.
But big brand name ………?????????
Hai Pankaj
Why I never wanted to work in a Big Company
I Like in this word. good keep it up and serve to small companies contrinuously…
Politics & backstabbing exists in all setups, big and small. but yeah, if you stay in a startup long enough, it does become like an extended family. you may not like all the “family members”, but you do learn to coexist lol. Same goes for work. Lot of diverse responsibilities. Some good, some bad, some $&%^%. but that’s part of the fun:)
To gain overall experience of IT industry and setup your own business you need a complete experience and not a half baked one.
Any business experiece will be incomplete if your career path does not grow from a startup – to a mid level – to a typical Indian IT company(Wipro,TCS types) – to a fortune 100 MNC (financial or non financial doesn’t matter!).
Examples of big companies doing quality and innovative work are google,MS,Sungard,Amdocs and various others.
Think about this :
@Everybody knows everybody and is reachable.
your networking skills do not get challenged at all in a startup.
@Its like an extended family.
more of a family with internal fueds. LOL
@It is usually very easy to see how your contributions supports the company and you feel more valuable.
Again..think what you would require to do the same in a bigger or a mid sized company. The carrer of a leader will grow in circumcircles growing outwards, starting from his family and friends ot society to a country .Each contribution is recognized but the level of efforts are greater at every stage.
It is more than coding.
@You end up taking on more and more diverse tasks.
This is true..One advantage of all startups.Helps in improving personal accountability and skillsets by zillions.
@You get to learn a ton and be a real part of the team.
None can restrict your learning except you.
@Fixed timing like 9 to 6. After 6, no ACs
False. In IT industry there are no timings for leaving. All indian and MNC companies provide a good infrastructure to their employees. Exceptions can be argued.
@Stupid firewall rules setup.
you can always bypass them.Improves your security diagnostic skills. I have been doing for years.
@HR people don’t even reply to mails. Are HR people consider themselves GOD?, Do we work for HR people or the Company?
They are shit stained everywhere startup or not they just suck.
@There is so much back stabbing and infighting going on.
@It’s hard to fire people.
Firing people is not a good thing anyways.Firing non-performers is good though for any business.
@Status quo / Follower mentality.
It is only in India because of our imperial ruled backgrounds. Not outside India.
All in all – to own a startup and grow it sucessfully to a big MNC you need to know all types on companies from business, stake holder, cultural and technical perspective.
I too second your thoughts and myself can correlate to the kind of ownership you feel when working in start ups.
Though Surya also has points that score well.
nice article….keep the good job….
startups do tend to have a very friendly culture and ‘family environment’. Good post!
Part of the reason that I teach college instead of working at any kind of company is because of the relative autonomy that I have. Blogging is sort of the same thing. The only problem is that I will never make as much money as you guys who get effective startups going. Oh well, at least I get a lot of vacation.
I agree with Surya. If you want to choose your right career path and want to be professional be with an MNC.
In startup you may end as Jack of all, master of none. May be for career starters/developers startups are good. If you want to see yourself at par with top notch professionals then you should be with an MNC.
I think smaller groups are beneficial in general, beyond business. Better for communication and cooperation.
If I worked for a start-up that grew to a massive company, I’d probably jump ship and join/start another start-up.
“A startup walks like a toddler, bashing into things and falling over all the time.”
Yes, it does seem riskier, but how else can you learn and grow? I’d take the bruises for the opportunity to explore…
We learn the advantages to smaller groups right from the beginning. An entire kindergarten classroom can’t play together, but smaller groups allows everyone to find their voice and learn to cooperate.
Once you’ve established yourself at the startup, it may grow into a big company and then you’ll have to jump ship and start the process all over again.
I completely agree that a startup is like an extended family. Everyone is working together to see their baby grow, and you get a chance to get to know your co-workers.
I actually went the opposite route: I started in a start-up and switched jobs for a higher paying position in a software company. I was glad to meet more people and feel like I was part of a bigger machine. Still, I did miss my quieter lunches…
HI,
I dont feel its good article,Its only good for the individual who expressed.
In Life motivational colum why we should have this unenthusiastic / unconstructive article.
I AM AN NRI AS OF NOW SINCE 2001.
I HAVE BEEN COMING TO INDIA AND STAYED FOR ABOUT 170 DAYS EACH FINANCIAL YEAR IN THE LAST 6 YEARS.
THE DTC 2012 SAYS:
AN INDIAN IS TAXABLE IF HE HAS STAYED FOR MORE THAN 60 DAYS FROM APRIL 2012.
PLEASE CLARIFY ON THE EXEMPTIONS TO THE RULE:
IS IT:
1) EXEMPTION IF A PERSON IS NRI( UNDER THE IT ACT 1961) FOR LAST 9 OF THE 10 YEARS
OR(AND?)
STAYED LESS THAN 365 IN THE LAST 4 YEARS
OR
STAYED LESS THAN 730 IN THE LAST 7 YEARS
MY DOUBT IS
IS IT “OR” OR ” AND”
