AU Bank Enables Digital Remittances for Overseas Equities (Purpose Code S0001)

In my previous update on cross-border investing, I broke down how I secured a zero forex markup outward remittance via AU Small Finance Bank. While the mathematical savings of that transfer were substantial, the operational friction of visiting a physical branch to process a capital account transaction remained a significant hurdle for systematic, recurring investments.
AU Small Finance Bank has now resolved this operational bottleneck by enabling Purpose Code S0001 (Indian Portfolio Investment Abroad in Equity Shares) directly within their mobile application and net banking portal.
To evaluate whether this digital pathway functions end-to-end without manual intervention or branch escalations, I initiated a $100 USD test transfer. Below is the step-by-step workflow, critical formatting considerations for broker beneficiary accounts, and the exact transaction timeline.

Step-by-Step Digital Remittance Workflow

1. Navigating to Outward Remittance
Log into the AU Bank mobile application or net banking dashboard and select ‘Send money abroad’.
2. Adding Beneficiary Details (Interactive Brokers / Paasa / Vested)
Enter the required intermediary routing details, SWIFT code, and receiving bank coordinates:
  • Beneficiary Name: Interactive Brokers LLC
  • Address Line 1: One Pickwick Plaza
  • City & Zip Code: Greenwich, 06830
  • State: Connecticut
  • Country: United States
Important Formatting Rule for Account Numbers:
The AU Bank account number field strictly accepts numeric characters only.
  • For Paasa accounts: A string formatted as 40801234U24912345 must be divided. Enter the numeric portion before the U into the standard Account Number field. The alphanumeric suffix must be entered into the SWIFT instruction / message field in the subsequent step.
  • For direct IBKR accounts: Enter your primary clearing numeric account string, and provide your individual account reference (e.g., U1234567) in the beneficiary remarks field.
3. Purpose Code & Charge Configuration
  • Select Purpose: Indian Portfolio Investment Abroad In Equity Shares (S0001).
  • Designate transfer currency as USD and specify the transaction value.
  • The fee summary explicitly reflects Zero Forex Markup and ₹0.00 service charges, adding only the mandatory statutory GST on currency conversion.
4. Source of Funds & Document Verification
Select your funding AU account and designate the source category (Salary / Business Income / Savings). You will then be prompted to upload two compliance artifacts:
  • Evidence of Investment Intent: Official Broker Account Confirmation Letter or a verification screenshot reflecting recipient beneficiary details.
  • Financial Capacity Validation (Any one of the following):
    1. Trailing 12-month bank statement (non-AU account).
    2. Latest acknowledged Income Tax Return (ITR-V).
    3. Formal Income Tax Assessment Order.
5. Regulatory Declarations & LRS Limit Verification
  • Review and digitally accept the Overseas Portfolio Investment under Liberalised Remittance Scheme declaration.
  • The interface pulls your historical LRS consumption data directly from the RBI Centralised Information System (dated within the trailing 48 hours).
  • Manually input any unlisted remittance transactions executed within the current or previous business day, then proceed.
6. Finalizing SWIFT Instructions & Submission
  • In the “Remarks (Message to Beneficiary Bank)” field, input: [Your IBKR/Paasa Account Number] / [Full Legal Name]. This guarantees accurate ledger assignment once the wire settles at the clearing bank.
  • Review the auto-generated Form A2 PDF to verify data accuracy.
  • Submit the transaction to generate an institutional tracking reference (e.g., AUXXXXXXXXXXX0001).
Pro-Tip for Interactive Brokers Users: Immediately log into your IBKR portal and submit an identical Deposit Notification matching the USD amount and AU tracking reference. This enables automated clearing upon arrival.

Settlement Timeline (Execution Log)

The entire digital transaction executed within standard market operating hours:
  • 2:06 PM: Submitted the digital form online. Received automated booking acknowledgment (AUXXXXXXXXXXX0001).
  • 3:40 PM: Received a brief verification call from trade operations requesting email transmission of the IBKR confirmation letter due to an attachment parse error. Submitted via email immediately.
  • 4:26 PM: Primary INR amount deducted from account; SMS notification received.
  • 4:40 PM: Received official confirmation: “Transaction Processed Successfully with Zero Markup & Zero Charges”.
  • 5:02 PM: Automated delivery of the official SWIFT MT103 transaction copy.
  • 5:16 PM: Interactive Brokers issued deposit confirmation notification (“Deposit Activity Update”); $100 USD credited and available for deployment.
  • 5:43 PM: Bank issued formal timestamped Outward Remittance Debit Advice.

Operational Implications for Retail Investors

Transitioning the S0001 workflow from manual branch processing to a fully digital channel reduces execution time to under 3.5 hours.
For investors executing dollar-cost averaging (DCA) strategies across global UCITS ETFs, eliminating both the FX markup spread and the operational overhead of physical paperwork makes this one of the most efficient cross-border settlement mechanisms currently accessible in India.
