Check TDS deduction, income tax refund Online

Just out of curiosity and to learn more, for past few years, I have been calculating tax, making whatever extra payment other than TDS online, filling return forms and submitting tax return myself. I am always excited to try new ways government implements.

I registered myself 3 years back to view tax credits paid by my employer as TDS. You can also register here : Check you tax credits. You can also download Form 26 AS here and see how much tax has been deposited on your name from your employer or any other firm.

You can view it to verify if the tax payments made by you or TDS deducted from salary or interest etc are correctly reported to the income tax department. You can also check income tax refund from previous year in the same form.

Now the same can also be checked from View Tax credit statement (Form 26 AS) section underĀ  “My Account” menu in Income tax e-filing website after login.

  1. I have income from salary is 67446 CG is 95000 and other income is 75136 and saving under section 80 c is 78388. IT department is asking CG tax of 16324 under section 234c. But my total income is not taxable. How to save this tax.

  2. How much it takes from the filing of ITR the refund of tax for individual?
    Is it credited in the account mentioned on the ITR or sent as cheque?

      If bank details have been mentioned in ITR along with MICR code, tax refund would be credited directly into account.
      Tax refund should come within 5-6 months of tax return filing if same is done online.
      For offline return filing, it may take longer for refund processing.
      You can check your form 26AS for refund status.

    i am a salaried person and i need to submit my ITR 2009-2010.
    Although company has deducted all taxes from my salary every month.
    But i,ve done some investment so i need to take refund of the same.
    Can u help me on this.
    Is there any penalty charges in the said scenario.

      There may be last filing penalty charged of Rs 5000.
      Also, as due to late filing, most probably your investments declaration won’t be accepted and no refund would be issued.

  6. i want to know about for income tax for those people who are working as labour like working in small shop…what are the process to fill IT.

      For non salaried employees or contract labor, ITR 4 (income from business/profession) would be applicable.

    In my Office Investment declaration is over. But i have taken LIC policy after that. In form 16, this Investment declartion will not be available. Hw to get the refund from IT. I always file online.

      You can claim deduction for extra amount not shown in form-16 while filing income tax return u/s 80C.
      Thus new computation would refund and income tax department would process same.

  8. can i file tax for 6month as i got form 16 for six month in imdian currency rest i am getting in pounds for which i hvn,t recieved my form 16

      You need to file income tax return for whole income you earned in financial year.
      If you are staying in India, your whole income (whether received from abroad), is taxable here and needs to be shown in ITR.

      • but i have received form 16 only for 6 months during my stay @india …so i can file 6 months return..abroad form 16 haven’t yet received…please suggest

          If you have lived in India for more than 180 days, you are considered resident Indian and whole global income would be taxable in India.
          You will have to show whole of your income in income tax return, no matter you got form-16 or not for same.

    Some of my friends are working on commission basis where their employers deduct taxes at source. But there is allegations that the amount of TDS shown in their Form 16A doesn’t reflect (i.e. mismatch) whiling claiming refund through ITR. How can I help them? Shd they apply for 26AS individually or there is any way for me to help them through internet promptly.

      They can see their form-26AS online to check whether employer has deposited same amount with IT department as stated on form-16A.
      If it does not match, employer may be in trouble if somebody complains to income tax authorities.

  10. my friend running small scrap business with saving account.want to know how he can file the IT return as a legal process and he dont have any records of scrap purchasing and he buys all scrapr from local scrap shop..thanks for your assistance

      Your friend would need to file income tax return with ITR-4 as he has income from business.
      He would need to maintain profit/loss accounts and shows same for income tax computation.
      If needed, income tax department may ask for bills/payment receipts for expenses done to run business.

    MY COMPANY HAS DEDUCTED MY TDS AND TOTAL TDS IS 29500/-
    BUT IN INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT THEY TOLD ME YOUR TDS IS SHOWING ONLY 4447/- MY COMPANY IS TELLING ME THEY HAVE PAID FULL TDS AMOUNT AND ALSO GIVEN A TDS CERTIFICATE.
    SO PLZ HELP ME TO WHOM I SHOULD CONTACT OR MEET REGARD THIS AS I URGENTLY NEED MY FULL REFUND OF ASSESMENT YEAR 11/12

    While trying to view Tax Credit Stt thru 26AS, I found my PAN is already registered. I had never tried for a 26AS registration and don’t even know anyone doing it on my behalf. I don’t know the password, nor do i know the secret answer. How can I view the 26AS and change the password? Can I find out or chase the one who did it unauthorisedly/secretly?

  13. My Income tax got deducted this March 2012. I had made investments but failed to declare those at our organization. Is there any way that I can submit the investment proofs in April 2012 or can I get the deducted tax back by filing the Income tax return and submitting investments proofs while filing? If yes, what is the time period for getting the refund?

      You can claim for refund while filing income tax return. Last date of return filing for financial year 2011-12 would be 31st July, 2012.
      You should declare your 80C, 80D etc deductions in income tax return form, there is no need to attach any investment proofs along with return.
      Refund may be expected in 2-3 months after filing if its done online.

      It cannot be done online now as assessment year has ended. You would need to go to income tax office and submit same.

  15. SIR, SINCE FY 2009-10 MY COMPANY DEDUCT MY TDS AND ISSUE THE 16A CERTIFICATE, BUT I NEVER FILE. CAN I FILE MYSELF IN ONLINE. IF IT IS POSSIBLE FROM WHICH FINANCIAL YEAR IS FILED. PLEASE ADVISE ME THE TAX SAVING WAYS.

  16. I was working in govt job in 2011 and deducted TDS as per rule by current employer. At the same same time, I got arrears after TDS of 6th pay commission by my previous employer in 2011 only. and now i’m working in pvt company, where once again my employer deducted my TDS. Now, I would like to know that whether, I have to fill separate form 16 from different employers or should give the previous details to current employer for the same. What should I do??

      You would get form-16 from all earlier employers who have deducted taxes.
      You would need to file single income tax return combining all yearly incomes from different employers.

    If one file the Income Tax Return online and also got the Refund online. How he will get the Assessment Order? There is any way to get/see the Assessment order online or he will have to write to Income Department. If yes, where he will write?

      If income tax return is filed online, assessment details are sent on same email id which is used while filing return. Also a copy of same is also sent on address updated with PAN.

        Thanks for your response but I neither receive the assessment details on my Email nor by post on the address recorded in PAN. In this case how I can get the duplicate Assessment details?

          You should write a request to assessing officer for providing assessment details.
          If they are unable to help, file a RTI to get same.
